Rewards vs Gifts
This is a season of gifting. There’s a study on gifts that I like very much. It shows how you can maximize the impact of a gift. It will make clear why the impact of a gift is bigger when it is:
Meaningful
Unexpected
Customized or Personalized
In the U.S., servers in restaurants rely heavily on tips for much of their income. This is one of their strategies to maximize tips:
Putting a mint or candy on the tray with the bill at the end of the meal. You may wonder whether this Really has any impact on tips. Well, this study found that it did.
Offering a mint or candy increased tips by: 3.3%
It’s the Principle of Reciprocity at work, which says:
People have a strong desire to give back to others who have given something to them first.
However, the researchers didn’t stop there, after merely showing the positive effect of giving something first.
They also demonstrated how the impact of a gift can be multiplied. Here is how they did it,
For another sample of guests, they had the server provide two mints per guest instead of one.
Tips now quadrupled, jumping by : 14.1%
Why? Because the gift of two mints represented a 100 percent increase: a meaningful difference.
Here is an important lesson: Meaningful is not the same as expensive. Small gifts can be meaningful, as long as they’re seen as significant by the recipient.
What about the other two amplifiers: unexpected and personalized?
Well, for a third sample of guests, the server initially put just one mint per person on the tray. However, after thanking the guests, he walked away for a few steps, but returned to the table saying: “You know what, for you nice folks..
and he put a second mint down in front of each person.
Tips now went through the roof, Soaring by: 20%

Goal Setting in the year 2024
Again as we enter new year, it is the time of new goal settings. Be it at the companies or personal lives, people want to set new goals.
But then what does persuasive science teaches about goal setting and how people can commit to goals and achieve them?
There is interesting studies about this,
Most people set goals on one single number such as lost 8 kgs or make sales revenue of 30% growth, conversion ration of 25%.
The other option to set goal is offer a range, such as lose by 7 to 9 kgs, Sales revenue growth by 25% to 35% and conversion ration from 22% to 30%.
Studies have shown that commitment to goals when set in range vs absolute has shown huge improvement in terms 30% more among participants.
Our mind works in possibilities vs absolute. Giving range gives us a hope and flexibility of attaining goal and helps us work towards it. Absolute number might make us think not achievable and tend to give up.
2nd study is about, committing to multiple goals vs single goal.
Here also when people were asked to focus on 3-5 goals every week for over 1 month vs 1 goal a week for a month, the results are hugely different. Multiple goals make people give up quickly and rare to achieve their goals vs focused on single goals.
Optimum goal for business setting is 3 or less.
